Bad Religion's Greg Graffin To Release "Anarchy Evolution" Book On Sept 28

Iconic singer, Greg Graffin, of groundbreaking West Coast punk rock band Bad Religion, will release his new book Anarchy Evolution: Faith, Science and Bad Religion in a World Without God, co-authored with science journalist Steve Olson, on September 28. The book will coincide with the release of Bad Religion's new album The Dissent of Man. Anarchy Evolution is currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Borders.com and bundled with The Dissent of Man at BadReligionStore.com. Additionally, a limited number of special signed, first editions of Anarchy Evolution are available for pre-order at AnarchyEvolution.com until September 28 when Graffin will kick off his book tour in New York City.

"I've always had a problem with authority." - Greg Graffin ("Anarchy Evolution")

This is how most of the world knows Greg Graffin, the rebellious lead singer of the legendary punk band Bad Religion. What few people know is that Graffin also received a PhD from Cornell University and teaches evolution at UCLA. Co-written with Olson, Anarchy Evolution: Faith, Science, and Bad Religion in a World Without God (It Books; On Sale: September 28, 2010; Hardcover) weds Graffin's experiences in punk culture and the academic world, and explores the deep connection between art, religion, and science.

As an adolescent growing up when "drugs, sex, and trouble could be had on any given night," Graffin discovered that the study of evolution provided a framework through which he could make sense of the world. In this provocative and personal book, Graffin describes his own coming of age as an artist, as well as the formation of his naturalist worldview on questions involving God, science, and human meaning.

While the battle between religion and science is often displayed in the starkest of terms, Anarchy Evolution provides fresh and nuanced insights into the long-standing debate about atheism and the human condition. It is a book for anyone who has ever wondered if God really exists.

Greg Graffin, born in Madison, Wisconsin, obtained his Ph.D. at Cornell University in zoology, and his master's degree at UCLA in geology. Graffin was the recipient of the Bryan Patterson prize from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontologists and also received the Harvard Cultural Humanism award. He has served as lecturer in life science and in paleontology at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Steve Olson is the author of Mapping Human History: Genes, Race, and Our Common Origins, which was one of five finalists for the 2002 nonfiction National Book Award and received the Science-in-Society Award from the National Association of Science Writers. He has been a consultant writer for the National Academy of Sciences as well as other organizations, and his writing has been featured in Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, Scientific American, and Wired, among other publications. In September 2004 he published with two coauthors a research article in Nature that presented a fundamentally new perspective on human ancestry.

About Bad Religion
2010 marks the 30th anniversary of quintessential Los Angeles punk rock pioneers Bad Religion. Formed in 1980 in the suburbs of Los Angeles by teenage friends, Bad Religion has become synonymous with intelligent and provocative West Coast punk rock and are considered one of the most influential and important bands in the genre. Over the past three decades the band has continually pushed social boundaries and questioned authority and beliefs armed only with propulsive guitars, charging drumbeats, thoughtful lyrics and an undying will to inspire and provoke anyone who will listen. The band's forthcoming, fifteenth studio album, The Dissent of Man, is a testament to why Bad Religion has remained relevant for the better part of three decades. Already having cemented their place in history as a groundbreaking band who helped create a movement in Los Angeles with classic releases like How Could Hell Be Any Worse?, Suffer, Recipe for Hate, Stranger Than Fiction and Process of Belief, Bad Religion continue to inspire and create with a unique style that continues to cross boundaries and transcends genres.

*Banner Pilot*, <i>Resignation Day</i> out Sept 14th!

We are thrilled to work with Banner Pilot on the re-release of Resignation Day out Sept 14th! Jacques Wait (Soviettes, Off With Their Heads, Dear Landlord) remixed and remastered the12 original tracks and added two bonus songs that are out of print. Originally released on Go Kart records you can score Resignation Day digitally through them on Sept 14th and we’ll be handling the CD and vinyl. Click here to check their tour dates and here to visit their web site.

Take a peek at what Nate from Banner Pilot had to say:

When we originally recorded Resignation Day back in 2007, issues came up during the recording that left us with little time for mixing. As a result, the record didn’t sound too hot. This was kind of a drag ‘cuz we didn’t feel like we did the songs justice. But! Sometimes you get a second chance; sometimes you can take something that was subpar and make it right, like when that Jason Mraz guy covered Blitzkrieg Bop. In our case, we were able to get Jacques Wait (who we worked with on our last album Collapser) to take a look at the original tracks and take a stab at remixing them. What he came up with was awesome, sounding like a new album. Usually something billed as a ‘remix’ will cause you to say “Uh, I guess the guitars are…. warmer now?” or “Oh, that’s cool that the ride cymbal has more zing in that one part now. Glad I bought this again”, but in this case we’re talking about a dramatic difference. Plus we added two more songs that are out of print, re-did the layout, and even changed around the sequencing. It’s like a whole new experience, maaan.

So if you checked out the album the first time around and didn’t dig it, give it another chance. We think you’ll like it. It’s like that one fairy tale where the first bowl of porridge kind of sucks but the second one is perfect.

Refused Get Hall Of Fame Treatment On The Cover Of Decibel

The groundbreaking, highly influential and sadly extinct Swedish hardcore band Refused has been honored by Decibel, the country’s leading extreme metal magazine, with the prestigious “Hall of Fame” installment on the cover of their September issue in celebration of the recent Deluxe reissue of the group’s classic album The Shape of Punk to Come.

Beginning today, fans can purchase a copy on newsstands or order online Decibel.

In an unprecedented worldwide exclusive, Decibel delves deep in the psyche of one of the most important hardcore bands to discuss the making of their prophetically titled album. For the first time since their breakup in the late ‘90s, the entire band has come forward to talk about the trials and tribulation of recording the album that ultimately led to the demise of the band.

Decibel’s visually striking cover re-creates the album’s landmark artwork for a never before “Hall of Fame” feature on the front of the magazine.

Decibel Excerpt:

After the breakup, the quartet issued a legendary press release that demanded that newspapers burn all their photos of Refused and vowed not to “give interviews to stupid reporters who still haven’t got anything about what we are about.” Now, 12 years after the release of The Shape of Punk to Come, they’ve finally agreed to revisit the most painful chapter in the band’s history.

Pick up your copy of Decibel Magazine’s special Refused “Hall of Fame” issue and the Deluxe Edition of The Shape of Punk To Come today!!!
